As a Texan and foodie, I am always on the lookout for new BBQ joints and exotic culinary experiences. Thus, learning about the existence of Estância Brazilian Steakhouse here in Austin aroused my inner carnivore just like when the very mention of “meat tornado” excited Ron Swanson.
For Millennials, many of their cherished childhood memories involve exploring their local Toys R Us, getting awestruck by the endless aisles of toys in all shapes and colors, and walking home with the latest NERF gun or LEGO kit. This month, the announcement that Toys R Us is finally closing all its stores and liquidating all its assets made major headlines. Looking back with nostalgia, I can’t help but feel a twinge of sadness but as an entrepreneur, I understand that disruptive innovation is an inevitable reality in the increasingly competitive 21st century economy.
OOH owners and advertisers are being swamped by technological advancements, all of which are promising insight that until this time has not been available in the Out of Home market. As a member of OAAA’s Innovations Committee and as the COO and Co-Founder of Abraxas Technology, I am often asked by those in the OOH industry about which technology is best for them to use to increase sales and show a return on investment for advertisers. You might find this hard to believe, but I do not always recommend our own technology. I know that we are the best at what we do (being able to passively collect data to show conversions, IE if somebody saw a billboard and then appeared in the store or online), however depending on the use case there are other options available.
For an Austinite, there are two tell-tale signs of springtime. First, we see the blooming bluebonnets. Texas’s iconic state flower has already transformed our hills, highways, parks, and campuses into a vibrant blue hue. As we drink in this natural beauty, our busy lives are to become busier as South by Southwest (SXSW) arrives in town. SXSW is Austin’s biggest event of the year, drawing tens of thousands of people across the United States and from all over the world.
We didn’t just head back down to San Antonio because we remember the Alamo, but also because we are now a part of the Geekdom Fund portfolio of companies! Not only does this give us additional penetration into the institutional investor community, but also extends our network through which we will grow Abraxas.
We’re excited to announce that we’ve been invited to compete in AlphaLab Gear’s Southern Regional Hardware Cup! For those of you who might not have heard of this competition, it is a competition where early-stage hardware startups compete for $50,000 in investment and over $50,000 in software, cash, and other prizes in the finals.
